The Air Hostess War
Author: DJ
I guess Song Kram Nang Fah is making a big wave in the international news. The last time there was any fuss about a Thai soap opera was last year when Pleng Ruk Rim Fang Khong with Alexandra Bounxouei was first taken off the air due to the protest of the Lao government.
Song Kram Nang Fah or the Air Hostess War made it on BBC news on January 22, 2008:
Bubble bursts for Thai soap opera
The makers of a sexy Thai television soap opera have apologised to aircrew who say it demeans them, and have promised to tone it down.
“The Air Hostess War” details love rivalries and jealousies among the crew of a fictional airline. After an outburst of protest, the programme makers have now promised longer skirts and no more “catfights”.
But they ruled out cancelling the show, as flight attendants had demanded in an official complaint to the government.
At the centre of the series is an affair between a married pilot and one of the stewardesses on his plane. The shows began airing last week and are said to have enthralled viewers. But they provoked outrage among flight crews and their union.
From MSN Entertainment on January 21, 2008:
Flight Attendants Object to Soap Opera
A popular new Thai soap opera about love and infidelity in the high skies has angered Thai Airways flight attendants who demanded Monday that the show be canceled for casting their profession in an unrealistic and immoral light.
“The Air Hostess War,” which broadcast its first three episodes last week, has captivated viewers with a story line about a dashing, married pilot having an affair with one of his tall, slim flight attendants. Love triangles lead to fighting in the aisles and steamy sex scenes at stopover cities.
The Thai Airways International union issued a letter urging the Culture Ministry to order the show to be pulled from the air.
“This soap opera is insulting and damaging to the reputation of flight attendants,” said Noppadol Thaungthong, a Thai Airways flight attendant leading the union’s action. “It’s all about sex and air hostesses beating each other up in the cabin because of love and jealousy. This kind of thing never happens.”
“We are demanding that the station and the producers immediately stop airing this ugly soap opera,” Noppadol said.
The union said the show could damage Thai Airways’ reputation.
I haven’t watch The Air Hostess War yet simply because I don’t have the time. I tend to skim through the soap for the most part because they are all the same to me. After a few episodes I just don’t have the patience for it for one reason or another and I usually can tell how the story will go. Maybe after my graduation I will take the time to watch The Air Hostess War. I can still post the lakorn without having to watch it. I wonder if all these publicity is actually making more people want to watch it.
