BBQ Fire

I went to a BBQ party last Sunday. I was responsible for marinating half of the meat. So what did I make? Nothing special really but the typical chicken satay and chicken spicy BBQ. I also made cucumber and shallot salad to go with the satay chicken.

There were supposed to be 8 people there but one person didn’t show up. We started the afternoon with cake (pie) and coffee and tea. It’s strange for me to start a party with what I consider a desert. But that is how the Dutch people do it here. When asked what I want to drink, my answer was “cold water” which drew some frowns. I was questioned by the group whether or not I was on a diet and I said no and that I am thirsty and want cold water.

I chose raspberries piece because I have never eaten it before in my entire life. It was quite delicious and I will buy one for my next birthday party.

I took second turn at grilling the meat. I should have done a better job with keeping my eyes on the grill since there were a few pieces of burnt meat. :( But in the end we were all having a good time, eating, drinking and talking. It was just a typical Dutch party.

After the dinner we were watching the World Cup game and I noticed smoke from outside. I asked a friend to check it out. Well, guess what? The wooden table that was holding the throw away grill was on fire! I was shocked and felt guilty at the same time for not having the fire put out. It was an indirect fire. Another friend was the one that set up the table and used the aluminum foil to protect the table. Not that it helped any.

What did we learn from this incident? Don’t use wooden table to hold this kind of grill. Well, at least I can find comfort in knowing that they were going to throw this table a way anyway. So, no harm done.
